🥚 Eating Boiled and Ground Eggshells: Why It’s Not a Safe Calcium Source

Introduction

Eggshells are often mentioned online as a “natural calcium supplement.” Since they are mostly made of calcium carbonate, it’s easy to assume they could be a simple way to boost calcium intake. However, eating crushed or ground eggshells is not a safe or recommended method for most people.

⚠️ 1. Risk of Bacterial Contamination

Even after boiling, eggshells can still carry harmful bacteria if not properly processed. One concern is Salmonella Infection.

If eggshells are not thoroughly cleaned, dried, and heat-treated under controlled conditions, they may pose a food safety risk.

🧪 2. Poor Absorption by the Body

Although eggshells contain calcium, the form is not always easily absorbed unless it is:

Finely processed into very small particles

Properly purified

Taken in controlled amounts

Even then, absorption is inconsistent compared to food or medical supplements.
