๐งผ What you can do instead
Soak in salt water (you already did this)
Rinse thoroughly with clean water
Optionally soak again in a vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water)
Rinse and dry well
This helps remove insects and reduce surface bacteria.
⚠️ Important food safety note
Even if insects are harmless, berries can sometimes carry bacteria like Salmonella Infection if they are contaminated or improperly handled. That’s why washing thoroughly—and discarding spoiled fruit—is important.
๐ง Why this happens
It’s not about “dirty food” in most cases. It’s usually:
Fruit ripening too long before refrigeration
Tiny insects laying eggs on the skin
Storage at room temperature for too long
๐ฝ️ Bottom line
If berries are moldy or rotten → throw them away
If they’re firm and fresh-looking → clean them thoroughly and they’re usually safe to eat
