How to Remove Grease Stains from Clothes Using Simple Household Ingredients

Grease stains can be some of the most frustrating marks to remove from clothing, but you don’t always need expensive stain removers. With a few simple ingredients you probably already have at home, you can effectively break down oil, lift stubborn stains, and keep your favorite clothes looking fresh.

1. Dish Soap Method: The Grease-Fighting Solution

Liquid dish soap, such as Dawn, is designed to cut through tough grease on dishes, making it surprisingly effective on fabric stains as well.

How to Use It:

Apply: Place a few drops of clear liquid dish soap directly onto the grease stain.

Work It In: Gently rub the fabric together or use a soft toothbrush to massage the soap into the fibers.

Let It Sit: Allow the soap to work for 15–30 minutes. For older, stubborn stains, leave it for up to an hour.

Rinse: Rinse the garment with the hottest water recommended on the care label. Warm water helps loosen the grease, allowing the soap to remove it more effectively.

2. Baking Soda and Vinegar Boost for Stubborn Stains

For grease stains that have already dried or set into the fabric, adding baking soda and vinegar can provide extra cleaning power.

Steps:

Sprinkle: After applying dish soap, cover the damp stain with a generous amount of baking soda.

Scrub Gently: Work the baking soda into the soap using a soft brush. The baking soda helps lift oil while providing gentle scrubbing action.

Wait: Let the mixture sit for about 30 minutes.

Vinegar Treatment: If the stain remains, soak the garment in a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water for 30 minutes before washing.

3. The Chalk Trick for Fresh Grease Spots

Need a quick solution while you’re away from home? White chalk can help absorb fresh grease stains before they become permanent.

How It Works:

  • Crush white chalk into a powder or rub it directly onto the stain.
  • Allow the chalk to absorb the oil from the fabric.
  • Brush away the powder and wash the garment as usual.

4. Cornstarch Overnight Treatment

For delicate fabrics or older grease stains, cornstarch can be a gentle alternative.

Instructions:

Cover: Lay the garment flat and completely cover the stain with cornstarch or baby powder.

Wait: Leave it overnight for at least 8 hours. The powder will slowly absorb the oil trapped in the fibers.

Brush and Wash: Remove the powder and repeat if necessary before laundering.
