Have you ever pulled into a gas station, stopped beside the pump, and then realized the fuel door is on the opposite side of your car? It’s a surprisingly common situation—and it can leave you wondering why automakers don’t simply put the fuel door in the same place on every vehicle.
Some cars have the fuel filler on the left side, while others place it on the right. At first, the difference may seem random, but there’s actually a practical reason behind it.
The simple answer is that there is no universal rule requiring every vehicle to have its fuel door on a particular side. Automakers decide where to position it based on the vehicle’s overall design, available space, engineering requirements, safety considerations, and manufacturing needs.
There Is No Universal “Correct” Side

Why Not Put Every Fuel Door on the Driver’s Side?
Putting the fuel door on the driver's side might seem like the most convenient option. After all, the driver could pull up to the pump and fill the vehicle without having to walk around to the other side.
However, vehicle design involves far more than making refueling convenient.
Beneath the body is a tightly packed network of components, including:
- Exhaust pipes and heat shields
- Suspension components
- Fuel lines
- Electrical wiring
- Brake systems
- Structural supports
- The fuel tank
- Other underbody components
Engineers must carefully arrange all of these parts while maintaining safety, performance, durability, and efficient manufacturing.
In some vehicles, the easiest or safest route for the fuel-filler neck happens to be on the left. In others, the right side may provide a better solution.
Vehicle Layout Plays a Major Role
The position of the fuel tank itself can influence where the filler door ends up.
Designers have to consider the vehicle’s floor structure, wheel wells, exhaust routing, suspension layout, and available space. Moving one component can affect several others, so the fuel door cannot always be positioned wherever it would be most convenient for the driver.
