Why Do Cars Have Fuel Doors on Different Sides?




Fuel systems have to be designed with safety in mind. The filler neck and fuel tank need to be positioned and routed in a way that protects them from excessive heat, impacts, and other potential hazards.

This means engineers may choose one side of the vehicle because it allows them to create a more suitable and protected fuel-system layout.

How Can You Tell Which Side Your Fuel Door Is On?

There’s a simple trick that can save you from pulling up to the pump on the wrong side.

Look at the fuel-pump icon on your dashboard. Many modern vehicles have a small arrow next to the icon that points toward the side where the fuel door is located.

If there is an arrow pointing left, your fuel door is on the left. If it points right, you know which side to position next to the pump.

Some older vehicles may not have the arrow, so you may need to check the fuel-door location yourself or consult the owner's manual.

So, Is One Side Better Than the Other?

Not necessarily.

A driver's-side fuel door can be convenient because you don't have to walk around the car after parking. On the other hand, a passenger-side fuel door can keep the person refueling farther away from passing traffic in certain roadside situations.

Ultimately, the side of the fuel door is mostly determined by the vehicle's design and engineering requirements rather than a universal preference.
