 🛒 What You’ll Need

🍫 For the Cake

🌾 2 cups all-purpose flour

🍚 1¾ cups granulated sugar

🍫 ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

🥄 1½ teaspoons baking soda

🥄 1 teaspoon baking powder

🧂 ½ teaspoon salt

🥚 2 large eggs

🥛 1 cup buttermilk

🫒 ½ cup vegetable oil

🌿 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

☕ 1 cup hot coffee or hot water

🥥 For the Coconut-Pecan Frosting

🥚 3 egg yolks

🧈 ½ cup butter

🍚 ¾ cup granulated sugar

🍯 ¾ cup evaporated milk

🌿 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

🥥 1⅓ cups sweetened shredded coconut

🌰 1 cup chopped pecans

👩‍🍳 How to Make It

1️⃣ Prepare the Cake

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

Add the eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla.

Beat until the batter is smooth.

2️⃣ Add the Hot Liquid

Slowly pour in the hot coffee or hot water while mixing.

The batter will be fairly thin—don't worry! That's exactly what you want.

Pour evenly into the prepared pans.

3️⃣ Bake

Bake for about 22–28 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

Let the cakes cool in their pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

🥥 Now for That Famous Frosting!

4️⃣ Cook the Filling

In a saucepan, whisk together the egg yolks, butter, sugar, and evaporated milk.

Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.

This usually takes around 10–12 minutes.

Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.

5️⃣ Add Coconut & Pecans

Stir in the shredded coconut and chopped pecans.

Let the frosting cool until it's thick enough to spread.

And yes…

Go ahead and sneak a spoonful. 😂🥥

6️⃣ Assemble the Cake

Place one cake layer on your serving plate.

Spread a generous layer of coconut-pecan frosting over the top.

Add the second cake layer and repeat.

Place the final layer on top and spread the remaining frosting over the top.

You can leave the sides mostly unfrosted for that classic German chocolate cake look.

✨ A Few Helpful Tips

🍫 Don't overbake the cake. Moisture is everything here.

🥥 Let the frosting cool before assembling. It will thicken as it cools.

🌰 Toast the pecans before adding them for an even deeper nutty flavor.

☕ Coffee enhances chocolate flavor without making the cake taste like coffee.

🎂 For the neatest slices, let the finished cake rest for a little while before cutting.
