🛒 What You’ll Need
🥩 For the Patties
1 lb ground beef
🧂 1 teaspoon salt
🌑 ½ teaspoon black pepper
🧄 ½ teaspoon garlic powder
🧅 ½ teaspoon onion powder
🧅 For the Onions
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
🧈 2 tablespoons butter
🫒 1 tablespoon olive oil
🧀 For the Sandwiches
🍞 8 slices rye or sourdough bread
🧀 4 slices Swiss cheese
🧀 4 slices American cheese or cheddar
🧈 3–4 tablespoons softened butter
🥄 Optional Sauce
¼ cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
👩🍳 How to Make It
1️⃣ Caramelize those onions.
Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they're deeply golden and sweet.
Don't rush this step—those onions are where the magic happens! 🧅✨
2️⃣ Make the beef patties.
Mix the ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Shape into 4 thin oval or rectangular patties, roughly the size of your bread slices.
3️⃣ Cook the patties.
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for about 3–4 minutes per side, or until cooked to your preferred doneness. For food safety, ground beef should reach 160°F (71°C) internally.
4️⃣ Add the cheese. 🧀
Place Swiss and your second cheese of choice over each hot patty. Let it melt.
5️⃣ Build the sandwiches.
Spread the optional sauce on the bread. Place a cheesy patty on one slice, pile on those gorgeous caramelized onions, then top with another slice of bread.
6️⃣ Butter the outside. 🧈
Spread softened butter on the outside of each sandwich.
7️⃣ Grill until golden.
Place the sandwiches in a skillet over medium-low heat. Cook until the bread is beautifully golden and crisp, then carefully flip and cook the other side until golden and the cheese is completely melted.
8️⃣ Slice and serve! 🍔
Cut each patty melt in half and serve hot.
✨ Want to Make It Your Own?
🧀 Try all Swiss for a traditional flavor.
🥒 Add pickles for a little tang.
🌶️ Add sautéed peppers for extra flavor.
🥓 Add crispy bacon for an over-the-top version.
🍞 Use sourdough if you don't have rye bread.
💡 A Little Tip
Keep the skillet at medium-low when grilling the sandwich.
That gives the bread enough time to become crisp and golden while the cheese melts inside. Nobody wants beautifully browned bread with cold cheese hiding underneath! 😂🧀
