Why Are Tiny Holes Appearing in Your Clothes? Common Causes and Simple Ways to Prevent Them

There’s nothing quite as annoying as reaching for a favorite T-shirt and discovering a tiny hole near the bottom. You wash your clothes carefully, store them properly, and yet somehow another little tear appears.

If this keeps happening, don’t immediately blame moths. Small holes in clothing can have several different causes, from everyday friction to laundry equipment, rough surfaces, and fabric-damaging insects.

The good news is that once you identify what is causing the damage, preventing it is often much easier than you might expect.

Why Do Small Holes Keep Appearing in My Clothes?

The location, size, and pattern of the holes can offer important clues.

For example, tiny holes that repeatedly appear near the lower front of shirts are often linked to friction. Damage that shows up after washing may point toward zippers, hooks, rough areas inside the machine, or other laundry-related problems.

Here are some of the most common causes.

1. Everyday Friction

One of the easiest causes to overlook is ordinary friction.

Think about how often the front of your shirt comes into contact with:

  • Kitchen counters
  • Desks and tables
  • Car seat belts or surfaces
  • Chair edges
  • Backpacks or bags
  • Countertops while cooking
  • Other rough surfaces

When fabric repeatedly rubs against the same area, the fibers can gradually weaken. Eventually, that constant abrasion may turn into a small hole.

Lightweight cotton and jersey fabrics can be particularly susceptible to this type of wear.

How to Prevent It

Pay attention to where your clothing touches throughout the day.

If you frequently lean against a kitchen counter, try standing slightly farther away or wearing an apron during cooking and household chores. Even small changes can reduce repeated rubbing.

2. Your Washing Machine Could Be Catching the Fabric

Your washer can be surprisingly tough on clothing.

Fabric may snag on a rough edge, damaged component, zipper, hook, or another object inside the machine. If you keep finding new holes after laundry day, the washing machine is worth checking.

Simple Laundry Habits That Can Help

  • Turn delicate garments inside out.
  • Close zippers before washing.
  • Fasten hooks and other closures.
  • Place delicate items in mesh laundry bags.
  • Avoid cramming too many clothes into one load.
  • Separate fragile fabrics from garments with rough hardware.

If the problem continues, carefully inspect accessible parts of the washer drum for rough or damaged areas. Any faulty component should be repaired rather than ignored.

3. The Dryer May Be Adding Extra Wear

Dryers can also contribute to clothing damage.

Heat, tumbling, and repeated drying cycles gradually put stress on fabric. Some materials are more sensitive to high temperatures than others.

You don't necessarily have to stop using your dryer. Instead, follow the garment's care label and choose a lower or gentler setting when appropriate.

For especially delicate pieces, air-drying can reduce unnecessary heat and mechanical stress.
