🛒 What You’ll Need
🥩 8 ounces dried chipped beef, sliced into small pieces
🧈 4 tablespoons butter
🌾 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
🥛 3 cups milk
🧂 ¼ teaspoon black pepper
🧂 Salt, only if needed
🍞 6–8 slices of toast
👩🍳 How to Make It
1️⃣ Prepare the beef.
If your chipped beef is especially salty, give it a quick rinse under cool water and pat it dry. Slice it into bite-sized pieces.
2️⃣ Make the roux.
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk constantly for about 1–2 minutes.
3️⃣ Add the milk.
Slowly pour in the milk while whisking. Keep stirring until the sauce becomes smooth and thick, about 5–7 minutes.
4️⃣ Add the chipped beef.
Stir the beef into the creamy sauce and add the black pepper. Reduce the heat and simmer for another 2–3 minutes.
5️⃣ Taste before salting.
The dried beef can already be quite salty, so taste the sauce first. Add salt only if it really needs it.
6️⃣ Toast the bread.
Toast your bread until golden and crisp.
7️⃣ Serve it up.
Spoon that creamy chipped beef generously over the toast and serve immediately. 🥰
✨ Want to Make It Your Own?
🌶️ Add a pinch of cayenne or smoked paprika for a little extra flavor.
🥔 Spoon it over baked potatoes instead of toast.
🥚 Serve it with fried or poached eggs for a hearty breakfast.
🌿 Sprinkle a little fresh parsley over the top for color.
💡 A Little Tip
The secret is in the sauce. Add the milk gradually and whisk as you go so you end up with a silky, lump-free gravy.
And remember—because chipped beef is naturally salty, taste before adding extra salt!
