You wash your strawberries, take a closer look… and suddenly you notice something tiny and white moving around.

Before you throw the entire container in the trash, take a breath.
Those tiny white creatures can be fruit-fly larvae, including larvae of the spotted-wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii), a small fruit fly that can lay eggs inside ripening soft fruits such as strawberries. The larvae are tiny, white, cylindrical, and legless.
And yes, it can be an unpleasant discovery.
But there’s an important part of the story that many viral posts leave out…
🔎 So, Are They Actually Dangerous?
For spotted-wing drosophila specifically, University of Minnesota Extension says there is no known risk to human health from accidentally eating the larvae. However, infested berries can become soft, damaged, fermented, or more vulnerable to other microorganisms.
So finding a larva doesn't automatically mean you've discovered a dangerous food poisoning situation.
Still, most people understandably don't want an unexpected little passenger with their strawberries! 😅
