Why Pancreatic Cancer Can Be Difficult to Detect
The pancreas is a small organ located behind the stomach that plays an important role in digestion and blood sugar regulation. Because of its deep location inside the abdomen, early pancreatic cancer often develops without obvious symptoms.
Many people do not notice warning signs until the disease has progressed. This is one reason pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed at a later stage compared with other cancers.
Researchers have found that pancreatic tumors can affect the body in several ways, including changing blood chemistry, increasing inflammation, and altering the way blood clots form.
The Connection Between Swollen Legs and Blood Clots
One of the most important links between pancreatic cancer and leg swelling is a condition called deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg. The clot can block normal blood flow, causing symptoms such as:

- Pain or tenderness
- Warmth in the affected area
- Redness or changes in skin color
Because blood naturally moves more slowly through the veins of the legs, this area is especially vulnerable to clot formation.

How Pancreatic Cancer May Increase Blood Clot Risk
Pancreatic cancer is known to create a state in the body where blood becomes more likely to clot. Doctors describe this as a “procoagulant” condition, meaning the cancer can activate clotting systems more strongly than normal.

Pancreatic tumor cells can produce higher amounts of Tissue Factor, a protein that plays a major role in starting the blood clotting process.
When too much Tissue Factor enters the bloodstream, it may encourage unnecessary clot formation.

Pancreatic tumors can also release substances called mucins. These proteins may interact with blood cells and platelets, making the blood more prone to clotting.
Together, these changes can create an environment where dangerous clots are more likely to develop.
Not All Leg Swelling Is Caused by Blood Clots
While DVT is an important concern, swollen legs can happen for many other reasons.
In some people with advanced pancreatic disease, swelling may occur because of low protein levels in the blood, especially low albumin levels.
Albumin helps keep fluid inside blood vessels. When albumin levels become too low, fluid can move into surrounding tissues and cause swelling, often affecting both legs.
