The idea is that covering the drain may help:
Reduce odors from the drain if the water in the trap evaporates during a long absence.
Discourage insects, such as drain flies, from emerging through the drain.
Remind you that the sink wasn't used before you left.
For a weekend trip, this usually isn't necessary. For longer absences in hot, dry climates, it may offer a little extra protection against odors if trap water evaporates.
