The short answer is: it depends.
Butter is different from many other dairy products because it contains relatively little water and is mostly fat. That makes it less friendly to the growth of many microorganisms than foods such as milk, cream, or soft cheeses.
But that doesn't mean you can leave every type of butter sitting out indefinitely.
